

It happens often enough to feel personal. You check the sky at lunchtime, and it is fine. You sit at your desk all afternoon, and it is fine. The moment you pack your bag and head for the door, the heavens open. Bangkok’s evening rush hour rain has frustrated commuters for as long as people have been commuting here, and it turns out there is a precise meteorological reason it keeps happening at exactly the wrong time.
It starts over the Andaman Sea in the morning
The process that soaks Bangkok at 5pm begins several hundred kilometres away, early in the day. Moisture and solar energy build over the Andaman Sea through the morning hours, forming the rain clouds that will eventually make their way inland. During the Bangkok rainy season, southwesterly monsoon winds carry those clouds toward the Thai mainland.
According to Wuttipong Nubanjong of the Thai Meteorological Department, as reported in a Bangkok Post article, the rain typically hits western provinces first. Ratchaburi and Phetchaburi, which sit between the coast and Bangkok, tend to see early afternoon showers, usually from around lunchtime onward. As the clouds continue moving inland, they collect additional moisture along the way, growing heavier as they travel.
By the time they reach Bangkok, it is late afternoon. The accumulated moisture that has been building since morning often releases as a downpour. “Bangkok is in the path of the southwesterly wind,” Wuttipong said. “It’s a pattern in the rainy season.”
Why the timing shifts from day to day
The speed of the wind determines exactly when Bangkok gets hit. On days when the southwesterly winds are moving faster, rain can arrive as early as 3pm. On slower days, it holds off until early evening. That variability is why the rain sometimes catches the tail end of lunch and sometimes waits until everyone is already standing at the bus stop.
The underlying physics reinforces the timing further. Across tropical regions, afternoon and evening rainfall is the norm rather than the exception. Solar heating destabilises the lower atmosphere through the day, building up the conditions for convection over several hours.
Research tracking rainfall patterns across tropical Asia using satellite data found that the peak in rainy season rainfall consistently falls in the late afternoon to early evening window, which in Bangkok aligns almost exactly with the evening commute. Bangkok regularly appears in flash flood warnings precisely because that daily pattern delivers large volumes of water in a short window.

Bangkok makes it worse
The city itself is not a passive victim in this pattern. Bangkok’s dense urban landscape retains heat through the afternoon and into the evening, keeping the city warmer than the surrounding provinces for longer.
That retained warmth makes the air above the city slightly more unstable than the air over rural land nearby, which can help tip already-laden rainclouds into releasing their water once they arrive.
The result is a city that sits at the end of a natural rain corridor, in a heat-retaining urban environment, at the precise moment of day when tropical convection peaks. The timing is not bad luck.
It is geography, physics, and the monsoon working together in a way that has been consistent for as long as anyone has been measuring it. Understanding why Thailand gets so much rain during this period starts with the same southwesterly monsoon system that times Bangkok’s evening downpours so reliably.
