Why Does the Caller Kidnap Noah?
The truth trickles out slowly throughout the runtime as we learn that Maia represents a key witness in a major criminal case against a powerful crime organisation. The Caller has kidnapped Noah because he wants to use him as leverage, use Maia’s unique position on the witness’s legal team, and use her to get rid of him. Failure to do so would result in Noah’s death. The Caller knows that Maia would go to any lengths to save her son, and so he used that knowledge to his advantage.
Plus, it doesn’t help that Noah is diabetic, and so not getting his insulin shots would prove to be fatal for the young boy. As a result, Maia is given a specific timeline tied to Noah’s well-being, and thus she cannot stop to ask for help or investigate why she is being targeted because each second counts. Thus, Maia isn’t simply running for some form of twisted amusement of the Caller – there’s a method to the madness and a very specific end goal that the viewers slowly learn.
What Does the Caller Want Maia to Do?
The Caller pushes Maia’s hand and forces her to make an impossible choice – she must kill the witness to save her son. The witness is staying at a hotel, and Maia must race against time to reach the hotel and go through security to shoot the man. Unfortunately, Maia doesn’t have a choice but to follow the Caller’s plan since he is monitoring her every move with the help of cameras around the city and her own phone. He seemingly has complete control over her every move. However, the last few minutes prove that Maia has had control over the entire situation from the beginning and is not as powerless as the Caller thinks.
Does Maia Actually Follow the Caller’s Plan?
The last scene showcases Maia’s resourcefulness as, even with the dwindling time in her hands, she fools the Caller and asks common people around her for help to contact Ted and make arrangements so that they can fool him into believing that she has killed the witness. The scene is set before Maia arrives at the building, and thankfully, the Caller is fooled just like she had planned, resulting in her saving Noah without turning herself into a killer.
Who is the Caller?
We never get to know who the Caller really is, but with everything that he has done, it is evident that he has some stake in the organisation in some way, but we never know how. Either way, the Caller clearly has a great understanding of technology and how to use it to his advantage. But his biggest resource is leveraging fear and using people’s biggest weaknesses against them. He knows that Maia will do anything for Noah and assumes that his constant surveillance will keep Maia in line. However, that assumption becomes his biggest weakness as she is far more clever than he gave her credit for.
Does Maia Kill the Witness?
As mentioned earlier, Maia had made sure to tell Ted everything, and he accordingly set the scene for Maia to shoot blanks and burst the blood packets that the witness was wearing. It gives the illusion to the Caller that she has done her job, resulting in her getting Noah back. But, as she later mentions, Maia is not a killer, and so she will not be murdering anyone.
What Happens to the Caller?
In the last scene, we see Noah identifying the Caller disguised as a paramedic, and Maia immediately alerts the police. Before he is arrested, the Caller realises what Maia has done as he watches the witness being taken away alive. However, there’s nothing that he can do anymore. He assumed that he was one step ahead of Maia, but Maia eventually proves otherwise, resulting in her saving the witness, Noah and getting the Caller arrested.
What Does the Ending Mean?
The Runner is about control and letting fear take over our minds. Maia is someone who has always had control over her life. However, the Caller proves that her idea of control and having everything together is just an illusion. Over the course of the runtime, the Caller proves that he controls every facet of Maia’s life and tries to destroy her sense of safety and sanity. Unfortunately for him, he got sloppy after a while, and Maia got her control back, making small decisions that will have a huge impact later on. Eventually, despite not having control over where she is going, Maia reverses the dynamic such that the Caller has no control over the fallout of her decisions.
