Thailand’s Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning covering 43 provinces and areas, including Bangkok and its vicinity. The 24 hour forecast runs from 6am on August 30 to 6am on August 31.
The department’s bulletin names ten provinces in line for very heavy rain. They are Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Tak, Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Nayok, Chanthaburi and Trat. TOPNEWS reported Nakhon Nayok in the heavy rain group instead, alongside Prachinburi, Sa Kaeo and Rayong.
Bangkok and its vicinity face thunderstorms over more than 60% of the area, with isolated heavy rain. Minimum temperatures were put at 25 to 26°C, with a maximum of 31 to 35°C.
The department attributed the rain to a monsoon trough moving down over the North and upper Northeast. The trough is running into a low pressure area off the northern Vietnam coast, in the Gulf of Tonkin. A fairly strong southwest monsoon also covers the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.
Rain is forecast over 70% of the North, the Northeast and the East. In the North, the heavy rain areas are Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Phichit and Phetchabun. In the Northeast they are Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Maha Sarakham, Chaiyaphum, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen and Ubon Ratchathani.
Central provinces Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Lopburi and Saraburi also face heavy rain, with coverage of 60%. On the southern east coast, the department expects rain over 40% of the area, with heavy falls in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Surat Thani. The west coast heavy rain areas are Ranong, Phang Nga and Krabi.
Boaters have figures to work with too. Southwest winds in the East reach 20 to 35 kilometres per hour, with waves of about 2 metres and higher during thunderstorms. From Phuket northwards, the department put waves at 2 to 3 metres, rising above 3 metres in thunderstorms. South of Krabi, waves run about 2 metres and higher in storms.
On the southern east coast, the department gave waves of 1 to 2 metres from Surat Thani northwards, and about 1 metre from Nakhon Si Thammarat southwards. Waves further offshore run higher, and higher again during thunderstorms.
The department warned that heavy rain and accumulated rainfall could bring flash floods and forest runoff. Low-lying areas prone to short-term flooding carry the greatest risk.
The department has also issued a special multi-day advisory, Announcement No. 7, on heavy to very heavy rain over upper Thailand. It went out at 5pm on August 29 and runs from August 29 to September 2.
