A Thai security volunteer in Chachoengsao province claimed he acted in self-defence after fatally shooting three Myanmar nationals on Saturday, June 27.

Police from Phanom Sarakham Police Station were called to a residential area in Koh Khanun subdistrict, Phanom Sarakham district, at around 11.30pm. Officers arriving at the scene found the bodies of three Myanmar nationals, whose identities were not disclosed.

Each of the victims had sustained three to four gunshot wounds. Investigators reported finding more than 16 spent 9mm bullet casings scattered at the scene.

A Thai man, identified as Phichai, was seriously injured during the incident. According to police, he was struck on the head with a glass bottle and stabbed multiple times. He was taken to Phanom Sarakham Hospital before officers arrived.

The accused, 24 year old Teeraphat, remained at the scene and surrendered to police. He identified himself as a member of a local community security volunteer team.

Teeraphat told police he fired the shots in self-defence. He claimed that a group of more than 20 Myanmar nationals had gathered in the area for a party, using a car’s headlights to illuminate the location and creating loud noise.

According to his statement, he and Phichai approached the group to ask them to turn off the lights and reduce the noise. He said the group initially complied by switching off the vehicle lights.

Teeraphat alleged that shortly afterwards, several individuals approached Phichai and struck him on the head with a glass bottle. He said the situation escalated, prompting him to fire a warning shot into the air.

He further claimed that the group continued the confrontation, with one person stabbing Phichai until he collapsed. Teeraphat stated that more than 10 individuals then moved towards him, leading him to fire multiple shots.

Police said they are collecting evidence and continuing their investigation into the Chachoengsao shooting. No charges or legal action have yet been confirmed, and further details on potential penalties have not been disclosed.
