A 60 year old Thai man shot a teenage girl and her mother in alleged jealousy of the teenager before committing suicide in a rented room in Saraburi yesterday, June 8.
The incident occurred at rented accommodation on Settha Samphan Road, where police say the suspect opened fire on a 45 year old woman and her 15 year old daughter inside their room.
Neighbours assisted the injured pair, who were seen leaving the room covered in blood, and rushed them to Nong Kae Hospital. The mother sustained a gunshot wound to her left arm, while the teenager was shot in the chest. Their latest condition has not been disclosed.
The gunman was identified as 60 year old Prayong, who lived alone in a nearby rented room. After the shooting, he retreated into his accommodation.
Officers from Nong Kae Police Station arrived at the scene and attempted to negotiate with Prayong, urging him to surrender. He did not respond. While police were preparing to enter and secure the situation, another gunshot was heard from inside the room.
Police looked through a gap beneath the door and saw Prayong shoot himself. Officers then forced entry and found him dead with a gunshot wound to the face. The bullet reportedly entered through his right cheek and exited on the opposite side.
A firearm was recovered at the scene and was found to be unlicensed. Police have not disclosed how Prayong obtained the weapon.
According to neighbours, Prayong worked as a gardener in an industrial area and had lived alone at the property for several years. The teenage girl lived with her mother in a nearby room. Her mother was believed to divorced with her father a long time ago.
Neighbours told police that Prayong had shown interest in the teenager and often gave her what she asked for. They said tensions arose after the girl began a relationship with someone her own age and distanced herself from him.
Police have not confirmed a motive, but neighbours suggested that jealousy may have contributed to the shooting.
