What’s the Story Behind the Education Rights Protection Bureau?
The series starts off with the ERPB suddenly arriving at a school and taking radical methods to rid it of delinquents. Although we don’t learn who they are or what their function is at first, we eventually piece together that Minister of Education Choi Gwang-seok and ex-military man Na Hwa-jin started this department together after a tragic accident in their past.
Gwang-seok’s daughter and Hwa-jin’s fiancée, Ga-yun, was a teacher who believed in always standing up for what’s right and helping students in need. However, she was murdered by one of the students she was always protecting, leaving a void for both men. Gwang-seok, thus, started this department to help not just teachers, but the entire education system to get back on its feet and teach proper morals and values along with imparting education.
Does the Bureau Persevere Despite Opposition?
Throughout the series, several people try to stop the Bureau from operating, especially because they employ strict corporal punishment whenever they see fit. However, Gwang-seok, through the Bureau’s ability to garner results, stops it from being shut down and pushes forward in imparting justice to whoever needs it. As promised, the Bureau doesn’t just stop bad students from causing a ruckus, but also fraudulent teachers and manipulative parents from causing pain wherever they go.
Despite several people trying to shut it down, including Gyu-cheol, the Bureau perseveres, stopping illegal and immoral activities in schools.
What’s the Truth Behind Ga-yun’s Murder?
While at first it seems like Gyu-cheol was having a mental break and lashed out at Ga-yun for no apparent reason, the truth becomes clear in episode 8 when we learn that Gyu-cheol was apparently not a good person and was dealing drugs in school. Ga-yun figured it out and confronted him, and was murdered for it.
After he is released from prison on parole, he restarts his operation in another high school, but this time, Hwa-jin remains steadfast in taking him down at any cost.
What Happens to Hwa-jin and Gwang-seok in the End?
In the end, the Bureau takes the help of teachers from the different schools where they have intervened and brings together evidence that there has been a steady supply of drugs everywhere. This huge work helps them in finally nabbing Gyu-cheol, who, at the end, turns out to be a scared student unable to comprehend an adult caring for him. Despite wanting to do so, Hwa-jin stops himself from killing him and ends up letting him get arrested once again. In the end, the Bureau continues on its quest to impart education in different schools together.
What Does the Ending Mean?
The ending is a happy one, which reiterates that a safe education is everyone’s right. Both teachers and students must work with one another to foster a happy and healthy situation where they are able to learn things and grow. The Bureau, despite being forced out of revenge, never strayed from its goal of becoming a safe space for both students and teachers and continues on its journey of taking care of these different factions. It highlights the importance of consequences when children make mistakes and why there’s no second choice but to gain knowledge and learning.
