Outer Banks Season 5 Characters: What Happens To Everyone We Grew Up Watching By The End?

Outer Banks Season 5 Characters: There is something almost peaceful about how Outer Banks ends. After five seasons of treasure maps, hurricanes, and friendships tested by a hundred terrible decisions, the Pogues finally get something they have been chasing for years: a life that allows them to live and is not about surviving.

Outer Banks Season 5 Characters

The Outer Banks Season 5 finale brings the Netflix series to a close with the Royal Merchant gold, one last hurricane and a goodbye that is much more interested in letting characters grow up than keeping them trapped in the loop of treasure hunting.

The Royal Merchant gold is found and becomes theirs, and the gang celebrates a wedding. Yes, there is also an almost dreamlike wedding in the end.

John And Sarah Finally Get Their Forever

John and Sarah’s ending is probably the closest thing that makes Outer Banks resemble a fairytale. The two survived the final hurricane, helped rescue their friends and eventually got their hands on the Royal Merchant gold: the treasure that started the madness in the first place.

The two celebrate their official wedding at the newly rebuilt Chateau surrounded by their dear ones, and that includes their baby, whom they name JJ.

We See JJ Through Kiara

Kiara is stuck in the kind of grief of losing JJ that makes everything else secondary. It is Kiara’s memories that bring JJ to the surface, and with Kiara we get to see the flashes of JJ we love as he returns for a few precious moments.

Kiara believes that Blue Crown might actually bring JJ back, and when she finally gets to use it in Azerbaijan, she literally begs for exactly that. Suddenly she sees a big shooting star that covers her in white, and a montage of memories begins. So Blue Crown does not really work the way Kiara would have expected it to, but we get to relive the moments.

Basically, Kiara gets a rush of memories; moments from their childhood and their years together. Though Crown does not resurrect him, it gives her something close to closure.

Kiara buys back the Maybank property and begins rebuilding it, creating a future that still has JJ’s fingerprints. She also becomes a marine biologist with the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries, finally moving towards a life she wanted to live. She also gives her a yacht for all the troubles she has caused.

Pope And Cleo Get To Choose Each Other

Cleo has been deported to Nassau and is told that she cannot simply return to the US. Pope, meanwhile, is still trying to figure out how to get his life back on track and eventually goes to the Bahamas, where he proposes to Cleo for the second time and she says yes this time.

They return to the US, Cleo receives her naturalisation certificate, and Pope gets a place in Tannyhill. Pope uses some of his share of the treasure to rebuild Heyward’s Seafood, giving his parents something tangible to hold onto after everything they lost.

Rafe And Sofia Leave Everything

Rafe breaks Sofia out of the jail, but the two do not simply disappear into the sunset. Pogues help Rafe and Sofia leave in a getaway boat for them to head down south. John tells Rafe to send a postcard from Rio, although the finale leaves their exact destination open.

The goodbye between Rafe and Sarah is almost devastating as they hug each other with a genuine affection.

What Happens To The Royal Merchant Gold?

After five seasons, we of course need to know whether these people were actually getting paid. They do!

The Royal Merchant gold, valued at around $400 million, is eventually recovered after the hurricane. The Pogues use their money to rebuild their lives and their island.

John rebuilds his childhood home, Chateau, with no changes but full air conditioning; Kiara buys the Maybank property where JJ grew up; Pope rebuilds Heyward’s Seafood for his parents.

The treasure does not destroy them this time; it gives them all a future. The Pogues also place a bench which reads, “In Memory of JJ Maybank” onto which Kiara etches “P4L”, the classic.

What Is The Real Ending of Outer Banks?

It was never about gold, perhaps, which sounds weird for a show that spent five seasons jumping off cliffs and doing all the adventures for it to be earned in the finale.

The Pogues spent years thinking the treasure is their safety net, but when the story finally ends, they are not chasing anything; they are home. John and Sarah have a baby, Pope and Cleo have each other, Kiara found a purpose, Rafe can start over, and JJ is remembered.

Pogues have finally turned the place they were always trying to escape into something they actually want to stay in.

P4L indeed means something deep for the Pogues and for us.
