A Thai transwoman was stopped at a checkpoint in Nong Khai yesterday, August 24, where police found 69 grammes of crystal meth concealed inside her rectum during a checkpoint operation early on August 24.
Officers stopped the transwoman, identified as 37 year old Viranan, at about 1am while she was riding a motorcycle through the Don Sawan Intersection on the Nong Khai-Phon Phisai Road. He is from Rattanawapi district in Nong Khai.
After being pressured by the officers, Viranan admitted that she was delivering the drugs to a friend and had hidden them in her rectum. Police then took her for a detailed X-ray examination and instructed her to remove the drugs from her body.
Officers found two packages wrapped in black tape. Inside the packages was crystal meth weighing 69 grammes in total. They also found a set of scales and several bags used to divide the drugs for sale in her possession.
Viranan told the officers that she had bought the drugs for 6,000 baht per package and described them as Grade A. She said that she had then divided them into one-gramme bags to sell to friends and other customers.
The police initially charged Viranan with the illegal sale or possession of a Category 1 narcotic, the illegal consumption of a Category 1 narcotic, and driving while under the influence of drugs.
She was taken to Muang Nong Khai Police Station and handed over to investigators for further legal proceedings.
The case comes after a Thai woman was arrested at an airport in Taiwan last week for allegedly smuggling more than 289 grammes of heroin into the country.
The woman was found to have swallowed 72 heroin capsules and spent 10 days clearing them from her system. Such concealment can carry serious risks if a capsule leaks, potentially exposing the person to a dangerous dose of the drug.
In May, a Turkish man was found dead at a hotel in Samut Prakan, where police found more than 50 drug capsules in the room. Police reportedly suspected that he may have died after swallowing drugs and suffering effects from leaked contents.
