Maa Behen Ending Explained

Why Were Rekha, Jaya, and Sushma Hiding Gupta Ji?

When Gupta Ji arrives at Rekha’s house late at night, audiences at first are given the impression that she had asked him to come for nefarious reasons. However, we later learn that Gupta Ji was the one who had arrived with bad intentions and had tried to force himself on her. Fearing no one would believe them and with Goldy’s wedding around the corner, they tried to hide the fact that Rekha had assaulted Gupta Ji and rendered him unconscious. Fearing backlash from society, they tried to hold off on letting Gupta Ji go and causing a ruckus, but things got out of hand.

Throughout the runtime, we see Jaya unhappy with her home life. She’s taken advantage of by her in-laws and is unable to have children because her husband is impotent. However, people still blame her for everything despite all that she does. Eventually, she is left frustrated, and it culminates in a screaming match where she declares that she will divorce him. The movie highlights the pressures that women have to face at their in-laws’ house and the thankless job of running a household. Despite everything, however, they are blamed for small inconveniences and asked to take on the shame of not being able to conceive.

While the three women try to keep Gupta Ji inebriated with cough medication, he eventually runs away, and the Gupta family realise who is to blame thanks to the gag that Rekha used on him (a sleeveless blouse). Burning with vengeance, the three women realise that they are about to be bested and come up with a plan – they ask Gupta Ji to come to their house and secretly film him as he orders that the three women dance for him. His lewd behaviour, however, catches up to him when he realises what has happened, more so when his wife arrives as well.

Gupta Ji taunts the women, telling them that releasing the video will ruin their reputation, but they eventually realise that it’s he who will lose his social standing because everyone already looks down on them. He is, in the end, bested in his own game, wherein he faces the shame that he had put on the women for years.

Why Do the Women Forgive One Another?

Rekha and her daughters finally understand one another and their standing after their confrontation with Gupta Ji. It finally becomes evident that Rekha was never to blame for anything, but it was rather rumours spread by society because Rekha refused to bow to their demands. This is showcased through her wearing sleeveless blouses, something that the neighbourhood women were scandalised by. It was apparently the biggest revolution that Rekha had brought forth, and it incensed everyone.

Painting her in a bad light, they also bullied her daughters similarly, and, now adults, both Sushma and Jaya realise that their mother was always innocent.

What Does the Mid-Credits Scene Reveal?

The mid-credit scene hilariously reveals that the truth never came out and that the ransom that was asked after Gupta Ji was kidnapped was demanded by none other than Goldy. In a twist that leaves all three women shocked, it’s revealed that Goldy never wanted to get married and was being forced by her family. And thus, when her father vanished, she took the opportunity to ask for 5 lakhs, disguising herself as the kidnapper, and used that money to run away from home.

It’s clear that she made a desperate attempt to get out of her father’s control and live her life on her own terms, and the three women clock that immediately.

The Real Meaning of Maa Behen’s Ending

At its core, Maa Behen is about the atrocities that women face in society. People are more than happy to take advantage of women for everything that they can provide and still blame them for the things that they have no control over. Gupta Ji painted Rekha in a bad light because he wanted her house. Jaya’s husband was similar, only wanting her to come home to serve his family. Even when he stayed back at Rekha’s place, it was to hopefully get the house, and on top of that, the demands were never-ending.

In the end, all the women got the end that they desired – Rekha and Jaya shook off men who were trying to silence them and take advantage of them, Sushma refused to be judged by society for trying to make a living, and Goldy rejected a future that others had planned for her. The ending ties all of these journeys together by highlighting a shared realisation – women are almost always blamed for men’s actions and decisions. that men are always forgiven for.

In the end, thus, the women break free from this vicious cycle of seeking validation and choose freedom, honesty and self-respect.
