Lock Upp Season 2 Episode 5 Review: A Strong Elimination Twist Is Overshadowed by Endless Arguments

The latest episode brings the Crackdown task to the unsafe contestants, who must fight to stay in the game. With a little mishap and a lot of unnecessary fights, the episode doesn’t bring anything new to the table other than a couple of new inmates who fight with Shreya Kalra, whose rage-baiter tag seems not to be going anywhere anytime soon. Despite having a task, the episode only focuses on the unnecessary drama at every turn, as even as the task is ongoing, Shreya continues to have verbal spats for no reason.

Lock Upp Season 2 Episode 5 Review

The Crackdown Task Delivers the Episode’s Biggest Surprise

This episode finally brings a task and, even though it doesn’t stay onscreen for too long, it’s still a welcome change of pace. The Crackdown task, introduced by Farah Khan, features a pinball game in which contestants throw a ball from one end of the machine and must run down to stop it before it falls and breaks a glass jar at the bottom. The twist is that the safe contestants can choose to target someone and give them additional balls to throw in the machine one after another, which they then have to collect in that order one at a time.

The game is interesting, although it doesn’t last for too long. Shreya Kalra, Madhuri Jain Grover and Shresta Iyer are eliminated quite early on, and the competition continues between Sufi Motiwala and Riyaz Ali. Ali wins the game in the end, but Motiwala gives good competition and his efforts genuinely come through. A mishap occurs at this moment wherein he falls over while collecting his ball, but he takes it in his stride.

However, the most interesting change of pace comes from the last twist that Farah Khan tells Ali, telling him that he must choose someone from the safe side to take his place in the unsafe zone. Eventually, he chooses Akanksha Chamola, who takes the decision sportingly.

Shreya Kalra Continues to Dominate the House… for Better or Worse

The name of the game in the show and outside is Shreya Kalra’s rather odd behaviour as the episodes progress. While she constantly asks those around her to save her and bombards them with questions surrounding whether or not they are friends, she also constantly picks fights with said contestants and calls everyone a bootlicker and a lackey. Although it’s difficult to understand who everyone is supposed to be a lackey of, the behaviour gets very old very fast, and it starts to feel frustrating after a while.

It’s clear that she is unable to move past her nomination in the unsafe zone and feels threatened. In this regard, it’s Ram Kapoor who does a great analysis of her behaviour after the 100th fight she has with Dheeraj Dhoopar. The arguments add nothing to the narrative and only go in circles.

Another interesting fight happens between her and Sufi Motiwala, who was her biggest supporter till this episode. It’s interesting listening to him mention to Akanksha Chamola that he feels lighter now that he’s having fun with everyone and not just talking behind everyone’s backs with Kalra. Their eventual fight between the pair gets extremely nasty as Kalra continues to age-shame everyone, and Sufi in particular, although he’s quite a few years younger than her. It’s a bit confusing.

A Heartfelt Conversation Offers a Welcome Change of Pace

Lock Upp Season 2 Episode 5: Sufi Motiwala, Varun Yadav

A change of pace this episode was watching Sufi Motiwala and Varun Yadav overcoming their differences and showing genuine growth when it comes to understanding each other’s perspectives. Episode 5 starts with Sufi discussing how terrible and terrifying it is growing up gay in India and the misconceptions that people have about his sexuality. It makes the entire room emotional listening to everything that he has endured over the years, even from within his family.

This opens the door for Varun to speak to him more candidly and apologise to him profusely for not being aware of everything. This conversation is quite heartfelt as Sufi, too, agrees to help him be better at understanding homophobia and how it works. Considering the unnecessarily hostile atmosphere everywhere else, this feels like a breath of fresh air and prioritises genuine human connection over unnecessary manufactured drama.

A Laundry Dispute Spirals Out of Control

Of course, the good vibes don’t remain for too long as another unnecessary drama takes place between Pamela Serena and Shreya Kalra over laundry. What begins as a misunderstanding involving clean clothes quickly turns personal as both Pam and Shreya scream at each other for no good reason. Maybe it’s pent-up frustration from before, but Pamela takes things way out of control for no good reason, screaming at both of them over a genuine misunderstanding. While viewers may understand the heightened emotions inside the house, it’s difficult to wrap our minds around adult women screaming at one another in this fashion.

Final Verdict

Lock Upp Season 2 Episode 5: Still
Lock Upp Season 2 Episode 5: Still

In the end, Lock Upp Season 2 Episode 5 demonstrates that the competition doesn’t matter and the entire show seems to revolve around petty fights over nothing. It’s so unbecoming to watch adults scream at one another and get extremely personal at the drop of a hat without thinking of anyone’s reputation. While the Crackdown task was interesting, we hardly spend time with it, and even then, Kalra and Dhoopar’s fight pushes it towards the same old tale.

With Kangana Ranaut entering the jail in the next episode, one can only hope there’s something more interesting than just silly fights among immature people. We’ll just have to wait and watch.
