Harlan Coben’s I Will Find You Review: Harlan Coben’s I Will Find You follows the formula that we have become quite familiar with over the years, thanks to Netflix’s unending adaptations of the author’s works. With grieving parents, buried secrets, shocking twists and a conspiracy that grows larger the deeper we dig, the series makes for an entertaining, albeit obvious, watch from the moment it starts. Does it take you by surprise and keep you hooked, though? Sure, as with every other Coben adaptation, this one, too, is quite generic but is adapted well enough to still be thoroughly enjoyable.

Harlan Coben’s I Will Find You Review
A Mystery That Refuses to Sit Still
The series follows David Burroughs, a man accused of killing his son and serving a life sentence because of it. However, when he suddenly finds out that his son might be alive somewhere, he breaks out of prison in hopes of finding his son and getting to the bottom of a mystery that destroyed his family. Of course, as with all of Coben’s novels, this search extends far beyond anything he could’ve imagined.

Much like other Coben mysteries, I Will Find You is intriguing on the surface as it brings forth a terrifying problem whose solution is nothing short of tragic and terrifying. The best part about all of these shows is that they hold on to a breathtaking momentum from their first episode that forces viewers to be invested. The pace and the meandering storyline make for a compelling watch, beyond whatever issues the show might have.
Sam Worthington Grounds the Chaos
Sam Worthington does a great job at playing the guilt-ridden father who desperately follows a lead when presented with the evidence of his son being alive. Following answers and with no other options, the devastation and heartbreak of losing his child are evident in every scene, as it’s clear on his face at every moment. Worthington gives him a vulnerability that creeps up on you and makes you root for him at every turn. The emotional stakes are genuine, thanks to him.

Everyone else in the show is equally effective. From Britt Lower, who, as Rachael, becomes David’s trusted ally in this quest to find the truth, to Milo Ventimiglia and Logan Browning, everyone does a great job at creating a mysterious situation that is equally emotional and terrifying.
The Harlan Coben Formula Has Never Been More Obvious
As mentioned earlier, I Will Find You has all the hallmarks of a classic Harlan Coben novel. Hiding information, telling half-truths, suspects and information falling on David’s lap whenever the need arises – it’s all in the blueprint, and it’s completely obvious from the jump. Several red herrings crop up all over the place, making the revelations feel obvious.

However, interestingly enough, this isn’t the series’s downside in the slightest. It makes for a comforting yet mysterious watch that prioritises suspense over realism. Is it extremely repetitive and obvious? Sure. But there’s a certain comfort in knowing the obvious upcoming twist that fans of Coben’s work will understand, oddly enough.
However, one thing that has to be mentioned here is that the twists sometimes become their own worst enemy, becoming so elaborate that they threaten the story’s credibility. Logic definitely takes a backseat more often than not, yet the series remains surprisingly enjoyable.
Entertainment Wins Over Plausibility

Again, as with almost every other Coben drama, this Netflix adaptation wins only if viewers take it as an entertaining and fast-paced thriller rather than a moving crime drama. With terrifying emotional stakes, escalating conspiracies and relentless cliffhangers, the series does what it does best and wins because of them. It makes the series an obvious thriller that doesn’t stand out because of its craft, but, in some capacity, the series isn’t trying to be a prestige watch. It’s ridiculously messy but is consistently watchable.
Moreover, the series also stops from being realistic at times, and the dialogue can be a chore to sit through. But the series mostly wins because of the pacing and this constant vibe of doom and gloom that adds to the mystery of the situation. For viewers who consistently like to be left in the dark, regardless of its plausibility, then I Will Find You does exactly that – replacing one twist for another and making the series extremely bingeable.
Final Verdict

In the end, Harlan Coben’s I Will Find You is an entertaining watch that leaves your heart racing from start to end. With unending twists and turns, the series can get a bit implausible, but never not entertaining. Overall, a generic albeit bingeable Netflix entry.
