Elle Review: Can Prime Video’s Legally Blonde Prequel Capture the Magic of Elle Woods?

Elle Review: The premise of Prime Video’s Elle is simple – to tell the story of Elle Woods before the Legally Blonde franchise. However, the series, with 8 whopping episodes, kind of asks the point of its own existence. While one might think that Elle would dive deeper into why the character became such a pop culture icon, it’s sometimes difficult to understand the point of the series and how it adds anything to the franchise as a prequel.

There are definitely some charming moments, and Lexi Minetree is a fantastic Elle. However, it’s difficult to sit through most of the series, because it turns out to be a repetition of the same plot points that don’t add anything as a prequel.

Elle Review

Elle Woods’ Story Begins Before Harvard

The series brings Elle from LA to Seattle, where she struggles to adjust to the vastly different life of the high schoolers around her. She tries to win everyone over with her signature positivity that is less vain and boy crazy than one might imagine, considering the topic of the film, but viewers won’t find themselves totally buying what the series is selling because it just doesn’t fit in.

If this were a standalone series, Elle would’ve been quite enjoyable as it captures the titular character’s journey from a slightly airheaded woman to one who has more to offer than one might imagine at first glance. However, considering this is a prequel to Legally Blonde, sometimes it’s hard to correlate how Elle went through so much character growth only for the character to do it all over again in the film.

As far as the storyline goes, the series is quite an obvious watch. Elle has to constantly prove herself and make hard decisions as she is bullied for being the new girl with a pink obsession. It’s not new in the grand scheme of things, but there’s a charm that makes you keep watching if you don’t think too deeply.

90s Nostalgia, High School Drama, and Plenty of Pink

The Elle series is a nostalgic show with a Barbie vibe to it. It mimics Legally Blonde in many ways, and there’s a sweetness that feels refreshing. Unlike other characters whom we usually come across, our protagonist always holds on to her signature positivity even when things get tough, and it leaves viewers feeling rather engaged, despite the petty drama.

Speaking of which, Elle’s quest for friendship will feel extremely relatable for many, as the characters do feel refreshingly lived in. Although most don’t have much depth, the characters aren’t at least extreme bullies, so it’s perfect for casual viewers who need a little pick-me-up.

Family Drama Brings Some Much-Needed Grounding

One of the most intriguing parts of the series is the family dynamic between Elle, Eva and Wyatt, who face devastating news early on, which changes their lives forever. Throughout the series, both Eva and Wyatt are friendly, approachable and kind parents, but even they make mistakes along the way. It’s interesting to watch them handle these situations throughout the runtime and eventually acknowledge their own role in the problems that crop up.

Some of these conversations are surprisingly heartfelt and realistic and will touch your heart in more ways than one. It makes the characters, especially Elle and Eva, feel more grounded and relatable and provides the emotional backbone to the story.

Did Elle Woods Need an Origin Story?

In the end, what made me constantly question the series is its point – did we need an Elle Wood’s backstory? While Legally Blonde is iconic, it’s a complete story that didn’t really need a prequel. However, the biggest problem is that, despite everything that Elle goes through in the Prime Video series, things seem to reset in the movie. It’s not a natural continuation of the story and leaves viewers confused about the point of its existence as a prequel.

Elle goes through so many challenges that are meant to make her the person that she becomes in the movie, but somehow, that logic doesn’t make sense. While Lexi Minetree is fantastic in a series and one of the reasons why it’s enjoyable to watch, viewers are forced to ask the point of learn a lesson in high school that she seemingly learned in college? Viewers will find themselves running in circles trying to tie things together as the series doesn’t add a new dimension to the story and, instead, repeats what we already know.

Final Verdict

In the end, Elle is enjoyable if you need a lighthearted watch that reminds you of Legally Blonde. However, if you run after trying to find logic, then it will leave you feeling confused since it’s hard to understand why Elle needs to constantly learn the same lesson over and over again.
