MANILA, Philippines—The Department of National Defense (DND) on Monday condemned the latest incident involving the China Coast Guard (CCG) against the Philippine Navy personnel assigned to BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal.
In a statement, the DND described the incident as part of an ongoing pattern of “provocative and hostile” behavior by the CCG.
Earlier, the Armed Forces of the Philippines said a CCG rigid-hull inflatable boat carrying eight personnel approached and circled the BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal on Monday while taking photos and videos.

Two Philippine Navy rubber boats then escorted the vessel away, but the encounter allegedly turned violent when CCG personnel struck a PN serviceman with a wooden baton, injuring him and damaging one of the Navy rubber boats.
The DND said the latest act of violence and harassment further contributes to the People’s Republic of China’s “deficit of trust and credibility.”
It also said the incident reinforces its policy of disengagement, citing the PRC’s continued violations of international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Furthermore, the DND cited the PRC’s refusal to recognize the final and binding 2016 arbitral ruling on the South China Sea.
“We simply cannot trust this belligerent neighbor,” the department said.
It also said the professionalism and determination displayed by Philippine troops underscore the need to enhance the country’s defense capabilities.
The departmetn also urged strengthening the nation’s deterrence efforts, reinforcing alliances, and upholding its commitment to protecting its sovereign rights.
The DND said it is monitoring the situation and preparing appropriate measures while reaffirming its support for personnel stationed at BRP Sierra Madre and the country’s western frontier.
