Why Does Lucero Begin the Affair?
Lucero has had a successful 20-year marriage with Fernando, with whom she has two children. While their family is loving and fulfilling on the outside, Lucero and Fernando’s relationship remains unfulfilling, as there’s a lot that both of them aren’t able to understand about the other. With demanding jobs, Lucero’s emotional needs aren’t met as well. Thus, when she meets Viviana’s new swim coach, Matías, it ignites something in her that has been missing for a long time. She immediately starts to fantasise about him, and eventually the two start an affair.
The relationship seems like a temporary escape, but the secrecy and the intensity turn this affair into an obsession. Rather than confronting the problems in her marriage, she takes the risky way out in search of thrill and anticipation. However, the consequences are larger than she could’ve imagined.
Why Does Everything Fall Apart?
As the affair continues, Lucero realises that she isn’t able to keep the secret hidden after it’s discovered by a client who uses it against her to get a better deal in their divorce case. This opens a whole can of worms, and Lucero immediately tries to end things with Matías, only for him not to want to let go of her. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, she decides to give in to the divorce negotiations, but Matías, in order to get revenge for being broken up, decides to start dating Viviana, who has a crush on him.
The film highlights how dishonesty forces both characters into a cycle of manipulation, jealousy and impulsive choices. Instead of finding freedom, Lucero finds herself trapped in a relationship that threatens both her personal and professional lives.
Does Lucero End Up With Matías?
Lucero doesn’t end up with Matías after he exposes that Fernando has been paying him to get videos of their intimate moments. Disgusted and confused, Lucero refuses to speak with Matías further. It also doesn’t help that he eventually dies under mysterious circumstances in their pool after walking out with Viviana.
What Happens at the End of Desire?
In the end, the audience is shown what happened on the night Matías died. It wasn’t just one person from Lucero’s family, but everyone who contributed to his death. While Viviana attacks him when she realises that he has been having an affair with her, Fernando leaves him to die in the pool. Lucero delivers the killing blow by actively drowning him, but the biggest shock comes from Julian, who had drugged him when he was at their house and started this cycle. Thus, Matías’s death is ruled to be a drug overdose, leaving the family safe.
However, this shocking situation brings the couple closer, as they overcome the problems in their marriage and finally find a way to come close to one another.
What Does the Ending Mean?
At its core, Desire tries to showcase the illusion that personal happiness can be achieved without hurting others. Lucero believes that she can get away with her affair but eventually realises that she was caught from the moment she thought of this scheme. As the different worlds collide, Matías becomes the unwitting victim as he loses his life despite not being the unfaithful one.
In a shocking ending, Lucero doesn’t even face any consequences for her hand in the chaos she brought forth in her family. She was a catalyst for self-destruction that left her children scarred, but did she realise what she had done? The film leaves it open for viewers to wonder.
