After being frozen for 100 years, Aang, the last Air Nomad, is awoken by Southern Water Tribe siblings Katara and Sokka, only to discover the news of the Fire Nation’s destructive war for the last century. With the Air Nomads extinct, Aang couldn’t help but feel guilty and feel responsible for the turn of events. Struggling to find himself and balance his carefree nature with the huge responsibility on him as an Airbender, he travels the world to try to reconnect with his spiritual side.

By the end, he realises that he must face his destiny head-on and end the Fire Nation’s war, and, as a result, he must train for his eventual confrontation with Fire Lord Ozai.

The Battle of the Northern Water Tribe Changed Everything

One of the biggest and most emotional turning points in the season comes from the battle between the Fire Nation and the Northern Water Tribe. The former had launched a full-scale invasion under Commander Zhao, who eventually was able to kill the Moon Spirit. The loss of one of the world’s most important spiritual beings disrupted the natural balance of the world and also disrupted and weakened the waterbenders during their battle.

With things quickly moving towards defeat, Princess Yue sacrifices her own life to become the new Moon Spirit. Although it helps the Water Tribe to survive the invasion, it leaves a devastating effect on Sokka, who had become close to the princess. The consequences of these events will definitely have an effect on how season 2 moves forward, and whether it changes Aang’s own trajectory.

Zuko Began Questioning His Path

Another character that we see going through a major crisis is Prince Zuko. When the series begins, his singular interest is capturing the Avatar and proving himself and reclaiming his honour after he was banished by Fire Lord Ozai. However, throughout the runtime, his journey encouraged him to look inward and ask uncomfortable truths about himself, his family and the Fire Nation as a whole.

His relationship with Uncle Iroh, too, helped gain some perspective as the latter constantly told him to look beyond revenge at the bigger picture. While Zuko continues to find a way to prove himself, his journey throughout the season proves that his determination is slowly starting to fade. As he continues to question the values he was raised to believe, the second season will paint a more vivid and in-depth picture of where he is going after this.

Azula Entered the Story as a Major Threat

The Fire Nation continues to be a major threat, and no one is bigger in that regard than Princess Azula, Fire Lord Ozai’s daughter. Known to be calm, calculating and extremely manipulative, Azula is considered a bigger threat than Zuko as she possesses exceptional firebending abilities and finds ways to achieve her goals. Unlike Zuko, she doesn’t doubt her father’s vision of conquest and is determined to see it to the end.

In Season 1, Azula, too, was desperately hunting the Avatar, and Team Avatar had an extremely dangerous enemy on their tail who would stop at nothing before achieving her goals.

Team Avatar Is Heading to the Earth Kingdom

Season 1 continues to showcase Aang’s training arc and, after surviving the events of the Northern Water Tribe, he makes his way to the Earth Kingdom. As the Avatar, he has to master all four elements, and earthbending is next on the list. With his friends with him, Aang will forge new alliances and get a few new enemies on his back, as well as travel to new locations to fulfil his destiny. His journey will also expose him to the political complexities of the Earth Kingdom, which might just complicate things further.

In season 2, he is slated to meet Toph, the gifted earthbender who will help Aang master this new skill. While Toph is a memorable character in the original animated series, thanks to her unique abilities, confidence and unforgettable personality, it remains to be seen how well the Netflix Avatar live-action adaptation brings the character to life. Moreover, the Earth Kingdom also brings Aang and his team closer to Ba Sing Se, the sprawling capital city of the Earth Kingdom, which will play an important role in the next phase of the war.
