MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte on Wednesday urged the Philippine Navy to remain steadfast in defending the country’s sovereignty and maritime territory, telling naval personnel to “stand firm in protecting what is rightfully ours.”

In her message for the celebration of the Philippine Navy Day, Duterte honored the service and sacrifices of Filipino sailors, saying that above all, she recognizes the Navy’s commitment to defending the sovereignty and integrity of the country’s maritime territory.

“In the midst of challenges facing our seas, you serve as the first line of defense,” Duterte, speaking Filipino, said in a recorded video.

As the Philippine Navy celebrates their 128th founding anniversary this May, Duterte also underscored the Navy’s contribution to building “a nation that is free, stable, and peaceful,” as she urged personnel to continue serving with integrity and courage.

These remarks came amid continuing tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where the country has repeatedly asserted its maritime rights and sovereignty.

Duterte, meanwhile, added that protecting the country’s territory means securing the future of the next generation of Filipinos.

“Remain faithful to your sworn duty and to our Constitution, no matter the challenges you face amid the seas,” the vice president said in Filipino.

Duterte concluded her message by thanking members of the Philippine Navy for their sacrifices and dedication to the country.

“Thank you very much for your sacrifices. We salute you. Long live the Philippine Navy!” she added. /jpv
