The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain warning for large parts of the country, with the risk of flash floods and runoff in low-lying areas over the next 24 hours from 6am on September 6 to 6am on September 7.
TMD said a monsoon trough is stretching across the North and upper Northeast into a low pressure area over the upper South China Sea, while a moderate southwest monsoon continues to blanket the Andaman Sea, mainland Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand. The combination is bringing widespread rain, with the heaviest downpours expected in the eastern Northeast.
Residents in the Mekong basin, hillside areas near waterways, and low-lying zones have been urged to stay alert for flash flooding and runoff, particularly in spots with a history of repeated flooding. TMD advised against travelling through roads prone to waterlogging, warning that short-term flooding could occur even in areas without a flood history.
At sea, waves in the upper Andaman are running at around two metres, rising above two metres in thundery conditions. TMD has told sailors in both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to exercise caution and avoid sailing through storms.
North
Thunderstorms will cover 70% of the region, with heavy rain in isolated spots. Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lampang, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Phichit, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun are all expected to see downpours. Temperatures will range from 22 to 27 degrees Celsius at the low end and 32 to 37 degrees Celsius at the high end, with variable winds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
Northeast
Storms will affect 70% of the region, with heavy rain in isolated areas and very heavy rain forecast for Ubon Ratchathani. Rain is expected across Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Surin and Si Sa Ket. Lows will sit between 23 and 26 degrees Celsius, with highs of 31 to 35 degrees Celsius, and southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
Central
Sixty percent of the region will see thunderstorms, with heavy rain in isolated spots across Lop Buri, Saraburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26 degrees Celsius overnight to 35 to 37 degrees Celsius during the day, with southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
East
Storms will cover 60% of the East, with heavy rain in isolated areas of Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi and Trat. Lows of 24 to 28 degrees Celsius and highs of 32 to 35 degrees Celsius are expected, with southwesterly winds of 15 to 35 kilometres per hour. Seas will run 1 to 2 metres high, rising above 2 metres where thunderstorms occur.
South East Coast
Thunderstorms will affect 30% of the area, mostly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26 degrees Celsius to 34 to 36 degrees Celsius, with southwesterly winds of 15 to 35 kilometres per hour. Seas will run at around 1 metre, rising to 1 to 2 metres further offshore and above 2 metres in stormy patches.
South West Coast
Forty percent of the area will see thunderstorms, mainly in Ranong, Phang Nga, Trang and Satun. Lows of 24 to 27 degrees Celsius and highs of 31 to 34 degrees Celsius are expected. From Phuket northward, southwesterly winds of 20 to 35 kilometres per hour will push seas to around 2 metres, rising above 2 metres in thundery weather. From Krabi southward, winds will ease to 15 to 35 kilometres per hour with seas of 1 to 2 metres, again higher where storms strike.
Bangkok and Vicinity
Sixty percent of the capital and surrounding areas will see thunderstorms, with heavy rain possible in isolated spots. Overnight lows of 26 to 28 degrees Celsius will give way to daytime highs of 34 to 36 degrees Celsius, with southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
Sea Conditions
TMD reported moderate wave activity across the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, with the upper Andaman running about 2 metres and rising above 2 metres in areas hit by thunderstorms. The department has advised vessels in both waters to proceed with caution and steer clear of stormy patches altogether.
