Betway Premiership log after Kaizer Chiefs LOSE, Mamelodi Sundowns WIN

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to the top of the Betway Premiership standings with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Polokwane City in Seshego, while Kaizer Chiefs suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Siwelele FC in Bloemfontein on Wednesday evening, ending their impressive unbeaten run.

Masandawana reclaimed first place after a tense encounter in which they were forced to work hard for all three points.

Proved decisive

After struggling to break down Polokwane’s disciplined defence for much of the match, Marcelo Allende once again proved decisive.

The Chilean midfielder struck just after the hour mark, finishing clinically after substitute Lebo Mothiba set him up moments after coming on.

Allende’s recent scoring form continues to be a major boost for Mamelodi Sundowns, with the midfielder now finding the net regularly during the crucial closing stretch of the title race.

Despite taking the lead, Mamelodi Sundowns missed an opportunity to put the result beyond doubt when they were awarded a controversial penalty in the second half.

Mothiba stepped up but wasted the chance with an unsuccessful Panenka attempt, allowing Polokwane goalkeeper Lindokuhle Mathebula to make the save.

Nevertheless, Mamelodi Sundowns held firm to secure maximum points and move two points clear at the summit, although second-placed Orlando Pirates remain firmly in contention with four matches still to play.

Significant blow

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs’ hopes of strengthening their grip on third place took a significant blow after an upset defeat in Bloemfontein.

Siwelele started brightly and were rewarded early when former Kaizer Chiefs winger Tebogo Potsane capitalised on a rebound to open the scoring against his former club.

Kaizer Chiefs struggled to recover and were punished again in the second half after a midfield turnover allowed Siphesihle Jeza to score his first professional goal, sealing a memorable victory for the hosts.

The result ended Amakhosi’s seven-match unbeaten streak and raised fresh questions about their consistency heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

While Kaizer Chiefs remain on course for a top-three finish, the defeat opens the door for chasing rivals to close the gap, ensuring that the battle for continental qualification remains highly competitive.

With the title race and top-three positions still finely balanced, the closing weeks of the Betway Premiership season are shaping up to deliver a dramatic finish.
