Thailand is set for a wetter day, with the Thai Meteorological Department warning of heavy to very heavy rain in several regions and a heightened risk of flash flooding. A monsoon trough moving down through the upper North and upper Northeast into a low pressure area over southern China, combined with a fairly strong southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand, is driving the wet conditions.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has urged residents in affected areas to watch out for accumulated rainfall, which could trigger flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in areas near foothills, waterways and low-lying land. People are advised to avoid routes that regularly flood.
North
The North can expect thunderstorms across 70% of the region, with heavy rain in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Phichit and Phetchabun. Very heavy rain is forecast for Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan and Tak. Temperatures will range from 23 to 27 degrees Celsius at the low end, up to 30 to 34 degrees Celsius at the high end. Southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour are expected.
Northeast
Thunderstorms will cover 70% of the northeastern region, with heavy rain expected in Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen and Ubon Ratchathani. Very heavy rain is likely in Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom. Temperatures will range from 23 to 25 degrees Celsius overnight, rising to 30 to 35 degrees Celsius during the day. Southwesterly winds of 10 to 25 kilometres per hour are forecast.
Central
60% of the Central region will see thunderstorms, with heavy rain in Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Lop Buri and Saraburi. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26 degrees Celsius at night to 34 to 36 degrees Celsius by day. Southwesterly winds of 10 to 25 kilometres per hour are expected.
East
Thunderstorms will affect 70% of the eastern region, with heavy rain in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo and Rayong, and very heavy rain in Chanthaburi and Trat. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26 degrees Celsius to 27 to 34 degrees Celsius. Southwesterly winds of 20 to 35 kilometres per hour are expected, with sea waves around 2 metres high, rising above 2 metres in thunderstorm areas.
South East Coast
40% of the eastern side of the South will see thunderstorms, with heavy rain in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Surat Thani. Temperatures will range from 23 to 27 degrees Celsius to 32 to 37 degrees Celsius. From Surat Thani northward, southwesterly winds of 20 to 35 kilometres per hour are forecast, with waves of 1 to 2 metres, rising to around 2 metres further offshore and above 2 metres in thunderstorm areas. From Nakhon Si Thammarat southward, southwesterly winds of 15 to 35 kilometres per hour are expected, with waves around 1 metre, rising to 1 to 2 metres offshore and above 2 metres in thunderstorm areas.
South West Coast
40% of the western side of the South will see thunderstorms, with heavy rain in Ranong, Phang Nga and Krabi. Temperatures will range from 23 to 27 degrees Celsius to 28 to 34 degrees Celsius. From Phuket northward, southwesterly winds of 20 to 40 kilometres per hour are forecast, with waves of 2 to 3 metres, rising above 3 metres in thunderstorm areas. From Krabi southward, southwesterly winds of 20 to 35 kilometres per hour are expected, with waves around 2 metres, rising above 2 metres in thunderstorm areas.
Bangkok and Vicinity
Bangkok and its surrounding provinces can expect thunderstorms across 60% of the area, with heavy rain in some spots. Temperatures will range from 25 to 26 degrees Celsius overnight to 33 to 35 degrees Celsius during the day. Southwesterly winds of 10 to 25 kilometres per hour are forecast.
Sea Conditions
The upper Andaman Sea will see fairly strong winds, with waves of 2 to 3 metres, rising above 3 metres in thunderstorm areas. The lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand will see waves around 2 metres, rising above 2 metres in thunderstorm areas. Mariners are advised to navigate with caution and avoid areas with thunderstorms, while small boats in the upper Andaman Sea are advised to stay ashore during this period.
