MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday warned regional parliamentary political parties against unlawful campaign activities for the first Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) parliamentary elections.
Comelec Chairperson George Erwin Garcia said that the commission is closely monitoring prohibited campaign activities.
The campaign period is from July 30 to September 12.
Garcia said that although there are no reported cases of vote buying yet, the commission remains committed to ensure the orderly proceedings of the historic BARMM parliamentary polls.

Garcia also mentioned the previous disqualification of a political party, reiterating the Comelec’s power to cancel the proclamation of a candidate once breach of electoral rules are proven.
“So ibig sabihin po hindi rin kami maga-atubili na mag disqualify ng mga kandidato at mag cancel ng registration o cancel ng mga sectoral organizations kung makikita namin na may paglabag sa mga basic requirements natin sa pangangampanya,” he said during an ambush interview.
(This means we will not hesitate to disqualify candidates and cancel the registration of candidates or sectoral organizations if we find violations of our basic campaign requirements.)
Candidates from nine major political parties are vying for the 80 legislature seats. Around 2.3 million voters are expected to cast their vote on Sept. 14. /gsg
