A Thai man was seriously injured when a homemade bomb, allegedly belonging to his younger brother, exploded inside their home in Samut Prakan on August 24.

Samrong Nuea Police Station received a report of an explosion with injuries at a house in Samrong Nuea, Mueang district, Samut Prakan, at about 9.40pm. Officers went to the scene with forensic officers and Ruamkatanyu Foundation rescue workers.

The property was a two-storey commercial building with a food shop on the ground floor. The explosion damaged furniture and other items inside the shop.

The injured man was identified as 27 year old Wuttiphat Kitcharoen. He suffered multiple wounds from explosive fragments and lost a significant amount of blood. According to Channel 8, some of the fragments struck his eyes. Rescue workers provided first aid before rushing Wuttiphat to Samrong Hospital.

Initially, Wuttiphat’s grandmother and other residents believed that the home may have been the target of a bomb attack, as a similar incident had reportedly occurred in the community before.

Wuttiphat later told the media that the explosion involved a homemade bomb that was suspected to belong to his younger brother.

According to Wuttiphat, he noticed the bomb inside a parcel box near his bedroom on the second floor. Concerned about the potential danger, he decided to remove it from the house and carried it downstairs.

Police reportedly suspect that Wuttiphat placed the box on the ground with enough force to trigger the explosive device, causing it to detonate.

The Hone Krasae news programme reported that police took Wuttiphat’s younger brother in for questioning. He allegedly admitted that the explosive belonged to him and said he had made it with a friend.

The brother reportedly told police that they hid the device inside the parcel box without informing other family members.

The investigation remains ongoing as police examine the explosive components and investigate the circumstances surrounding the blast.
