But the point of everyone who has been calling for the disarming of language — incidentally a theme of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate — especially among leaders, is that their words tend to be world-building, and the world that lethal words construct is precisely the kind in which the taking of lives becomes normal, and that is a world no one deserves.
