Sundance 2027: There is something surreal about writing about Sundance before the movies have even been announced. Usually, when the conversations around the Sundance Film Festival begin to creep into the cultural discourses, we already have the titles to obsess over.

Sundance 2027: What Is It?

There usually is a little indie film nobody ever heard of, the actor doing something supremely different or the documentary that everyone will apparently be talking about for the next six months. Sundance 2027 is, however, different.

After more than four decades in Utah, the Sundance Film Festival seems to have moved on. It is moving into a completely new chapter with its first Boulder edition to be staged from January 21 to January 31, 2027. This is not a little venue change on a new temporary experiment. Boulder is officially becoming the home from Sundance 2027 onwards, which means Sundance 2027 would also be the first Sundance Film Festival of a new era.

Important Question: The Dates; When Is Sundance 2027?

Mark your calendars because the Sundance Film Festival will happen from January 21 to January 31, 2027. The festival will take place across Boulder, Colorado, with world premieres beginning on January 21, 2027 till January 26, 2027 and the entire festival continuing till January 31, 2027.

The Festival Gala is scheduled for January 22, 2027, while the awards will be announced on January 29, 2027. For those joining the festival outside of Colorado, anywhere across the country, at-home online screenings are scheduled from January 28 to January 31, offering films in our five competition sections, including NEXT. 

So Sundance 2027 is changing its scenery without completely abandoning the people who experience it from their homes.

Sundance Is Shifting Home

In March 2025, Sundance Institute announced that Boulder, Colorado would become the new home of the Sundance Film Festival beginning in 2027. 

The Institute described Boulder as a place with a strong arts community, engaged audiences, a walkable downtown, and the kind of natural setting it believed could support the future of the film festival. There is a particular visual difference. 

Park City gave Sundance Film Festival snow-covered streets, mountain resorts and the particular kind of winter-film-festival atmosphere. Boulder gives the Sundance Film Festival a new era with the Rocky Mountains sitting like a dramatic background, which is suspiciously cinematic.

What Films Are Coming?

We do not know the lineup yet, and let us please resist the urge to believe every “Sundance 2027 lineup leaked” post, if there are any.

As of August 2026, the official lineup has not been announced yet, but what we know is that Sundance 2026 gave us a pretty good reminder of Sundance’s taste: Josephine, Nuisance Bear, Shame and Money, and To Hold a Mountain were among the major winners, while Josephine took both the US Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award.

Why Is Sundance Changing Places?

The 2026 Sundance Film Festival was the final edition held in Park City and Salt Lake City, closing out the festival’s Utah chapter. It carried the legacy of co-founder Robert Redford, whose vision shaped Sundance and independent cinema for decades.

Boulder now gets to write the chapter, and it is not supposed to become Park City. Sundance is perhaps deliberately building something new to write something bigger.

Sundance says its Boulder venues will sit within roughly a two-mile radius with key locations around the University of Colorado Boulder and Pearl Street, which means a festival that could feel much more compact and walkable. The festival also gets bigger this time.

In 2027, its four main competition categories: U.S. Dramatic, World Cinema Dramatic, U.S. Documentary, and World Cinema Documentary will grow to 12 films each. Other sections, including Premieres, NEXT, Midnight, Family Matinee, and more, will also expand. 

When Do Tickets Go On Sale?

The information about passes and ticket packages is expected in September 2026. Passes and packages go on sale in October, and single film tickets in early January 2027. 

The Real Story of Sundance 2027

The most exciting story is perhaps how Sundance 2027 gets to start over. Park City gave the festival its identity, and Boulder gets the chance to give it a new one.

The snow, the famous faces and the premieres will still be there, but behind all of that, Sundance is still chasing the same little cinema miracle: the moment the lights go down, and you discover something before everyone else does.

That is what the Sundance Film Festival has always done, and Sundance 2027 gets to do it somewhere new.
