Come With Me Review

A Thriller About How Fear Takes Over

With how the world is working right now, with mounting uncertainty in every sphere of life, it’s almost obvious that people will feel vulnerable in one way or another. Nothing seems to be guaranteed anymore, and taking advantage of this uncertainty are certain factions of people who will do anything to take advantage of us. Come With Me is a gripping and claustrophobic look at a working-class man’s descent into this paranoia after a home invasion leaves him vulnerable and helpless.

While the break-in itself isn’t really traumatic, it’s losing control and having your hands tied that pushes him over the edge. Much like in his work life and with his best friend’s death, it’s a lot of incidents that leave him uncertain and vulnerable, and he slowly slips into the red pill rhetoric that has really crept into men’s lives these days.

Sure, dissecting the woes of the straight American man might seem like a bit much, but Come With Me paints a rather terrifying picture of what happens when people don’t catch the signs of radicalisation in people as the tension slowly rises with each passing second. Exploring perception, paranoia and the power of external voices, the notion that Simon can snap at any moment is enough to keep viewers invested. It’s not about what happens when he gets there, but how he does so.

It’s interesting to watch this no-face man’s words have such a profound impact on Simon, as, while he asks his listeners to do something definitive and speak openly, Dalton Kirby’s words exist behind shadows as he only takes advantage of the fear and paranoia inside his viewers. While he’s not the one openly saying anything, he’s definitely instigating a reaction by pressing all the right buttons. It’s an interesting watch that will make viewers see something deeper into how something like this can happen to the most regular and mundane person out there.

The Story Takes Its Time

There aren’t a lot of shocking moments or turning points that will make you sit up while watching this film. However, Come With Me highlights the little moments, the moments of uncertainty, and the mistakes that we make that slowly come together to create something huge. And by slowly, I do mean quite slowly. The film is quite slow and takes a lot of time to get to that point.

Till then, the film builds the tension and leaves viewers uncomfortable. And sure, the irony of the straight man bickering about his problems will not be lost on anyone else, but it’s such a pervasive problem that a look into the mind of someone on a downward spiral makes for a great watch.

Theo Rossi Is the Film’s Biggest Strength

Considering the movie mostly takes place inside Simon’s head as he slowly loses his wits about him, Rossi is the most important person here. Along with Perlman’s voice that is so eerie to listen to, spewing hateful rhetoric and pushing all the right buttons, Rossi does a fantastic job of making us sit on the edge of our seats watching him make one wrong decision after another. The actor carries the movie on his shoulders as we see his frustration, anger and fear begin to distort the world around him.

It’s interesting to watch him in the film – he’s both a vulnerable man who needs a lot of help, while also being a terrifying embodiment of what can happen when we don’t see the warning signs. His increasingly troubling behaviour becomes truly unsettling the more you watch it, and Rossi does a fantastic job of making his character just a bit more unhinged every passing second.

Final Thoughts

Come With Me is intense and, more importantly, a timely watch that highlights where the world might be going with increasing uncertainty in the world and the red pill rhetoric making vulnerable adults make bad decisions. It’s not a conventional thriller, but one that knows how to get under your skin. Overall, it balances the emotional element of the story with the thrilling part quite well, because, let’s face it: there’s just something really sad about all of this. Perlman is a fantastic addition to the cast, but it’s Rossi who steals the show here. Overall, it’s not a conventional thriller, but one whose tragedy is truly its biggest takeaway.
