Everything to Look Forward to in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse: What Can We Anticipate?

Everything to Look Forward to in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse: The Spider-Man franchise is like a place where comic panels can become animations, animations can look like graffiti, and one Spider-Man can turn into many different Spider-People before you get the time to process it.

After Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse gave us Miles Morales and quickly broke our stereotypical understanding of what an animated superhero movie could look like, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse decided that one universe was not enough. It ended with Miles Morales trapped on Earth-42, Gwen assembling a rescue team, and the multiverse looking increasingly like it required an emergency meeting.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse thus has a difficult job on its shoulders.

The film is officially scheduled to arrive in theatres on June 18, 2027, with Sony describing it as the conclusion of the Spider-Verse trilogy.

The official synopsis given by Sony Pictures says that Miles Morales will find himself in the darkest corner of the Spider-Verse in search of a way back home. It is a “race against the clock” for Miles Morales to travel across the wild reach of time and space and to fight for and reunite everything he holds close.

Miles Morales would be on his toes and basically has no time to breathe.

Miles Morales Finally Getting To Fight For His Own Story

The biggest thing to look forward to is, of course, Miles Morales, but not just as Spider-Man. Miles has spent much time in the franchise being told what he is supposed to become by other Spider-People, most notably by Miguel O’Hara, by the idea of canon and circumstances around him.

The third film looks like it is set to push that conflict to its breaking point. With the official synopsis making the stakes personal: Miles is not simply trying to save the multiverse, but he is trying to get back to his family who have been “fractured and endangered because of his calling”.

Behind all the portals, glitches, variants and really cool action sequences, Miles Morales is still a kid who wants to go home. The emotional core is apparently going to be even more important this time. We can perhaps anticipate Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse to be the most emotional of the three movies. Let us be prepared for the action but also more for the emotional havoc.

Earth-42 Miles and the Prowler Problem

Miles G. Morales from Earth-42 became the Prowler, and the Prowler conflict is fully set, hanging over our protagonist’s head.

The eventual confrontation should be one of the most fascinating things Spider-Verse has to deliver. Will Miles try to save him, and will the relationship get more complicated than a simple hero-villain conflict? And will there be such a dynamic with Uncle Aaron in the picture?

Because “Beyond” does have an opportunity to ask whether an alternative version of you has to define what you become, which is a very Spider-Verse question to put.

Gwen Stacy is Not Sitting Off the Road

Gwen Stacy began in Across the Spider-Verse by keeping Miles at an arm’s length, trapped between the strict rules of the Spider-Society and her deep feelings for Miles, but by the end she becomes the emotional anchor.

Gwen might not be passive anymore. She would no longer wait for the hero to rescue her, but she would rescue Miles. That distinction is important. Her relationship with Miles has always been one of the emotional anchors of the Verse, but Beyond the Spider-Verse gets to explore what happens when both of them choose each other rather than circumstances pulling them together.

Considering Gwen has already experienced losing her loved ones, there is a lot of emotional baggage to unpack.

Is The Spider-Gang Coming Back?

If there is one thing this franchise understands better than most superhero franchises, it is the role of supporting characters. They can be as much fun as the main character, and we would love having some in Beyond.

We can await a little chaos and a lot of fun because the return itself is enough reason to celebrate. Hobie spent Across behaving like he had wandered into the movie from a completely different punk-rock dimension, and Pavitr deserves more time after being one of the most delightful additions.

Spider-Verse (Miles Morales, Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy)
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse: Shameik Moore as Miles Morales/Spider-Man, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker/ Spider-Man, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy (in Into the Spider-Verse)

Every relationship would perhaps be examined carefully, and the MilesxPeter B Parker screen time is what we await.

We Need Some Explanations

The philosophical clash enters the third movie: the Spider-Society’s rules and the idea that certain events are supposed to happen across Spider-Man’s stories, with Miles rejecting the idea that his life should be dictated by someone’s version of ‘canon’.

Beyond has an opportunity to make Miguel more than a big scary Spider-Man who chases Miles and to explore what happens when Miles proves that the “canons” can be rewritten. Or perhaps most importantly, what happens if Miguel realises that the thing he was trying to prevent was inevitable.

The Animation

Spider-Verse does not simply do good animation. The first movie introduced audiences to a comic-book world that looked like it escaped the page, while the second one went fully feral with its visual language, styles, colours and textures.

We can anticipate something different in Beyond the Spider-Verse, given the design progression. After Across the Spider-Verse went really up, and because the story now moves through even more corners of the Spider-Verse, there is enormous room for the filmmakers to introduce new visual styles, worlds and interpretations of Spider-Man. A cinematic neo-noir portrayal that blends the gritty, shadowed tropes of classic film noir with modern, hyper-realistic grit, naturalistic lighting, and gritty contemporary settings can perhaps beat them.

Good luck to everyone involved!

We are only anticipating everything above; nothing has been confirmed officially. What we can be sure of is a release on June 18, 2027.
