The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a Thailand weather forecast for August 9, warning of heavy rain, flash floods and rough seas across several regions as a monsoon trough and a strengthening southwest monsoon continue to sweep the country.
The TMD said the monsoon trough is lying across upper North Thailand and upper Laos, while the southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand has strengthened. Residents in affected areas were urged to watch for accumulated rainfall that could trigger flash floods and run off, particularly near foothills, waterways and low lying land.
The department also warned of rough seas in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand, with waves of 2 to 3 metres and exceeding 3 metres in thunderstorm areas. Sailors were advised to navigate with caution and avoid stormy areas, while small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand were told to stay ashore.
Separately, the TMD noted that Typhoon Dolphin over the East China Sea is expected to make landfall in China’s Zhejiang province on August 9 to 10. The typhoon is not forecast to move into Thailand, but travellers heading to the region were advised to check weather conditions before departing.
The forecast covers 6am today until 6am tomorrow.
North
Thunderstorms are expected across 70% of the area, with heavy rain in several spots in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Tak, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun. Temperatures will range from 22 to 27 degrees Celsius at the low end and 31 to 35 degrees Celsius at the high end, with southwest winds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
Northeast
Thunderstorms are forecast over 60% of the area, with heavy rain in some spots in Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima and Ubon Ratchathani. Temperatures will range from 23 to 25 degrees Celsius to 29 to 34 degrees Celsius, with southwest winds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
Central
Thunderstorms are expected over 60% of the area, with heavy rain in some spots in Lop Buri, Saraburi and Kanchanaburi. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26 degrees Celsius to 33 to 36 degrees Celsius, with southwest winds of 10 to 25 kilometres per hour.
East
Thunderstorms are forecast over 60% of the area, with heavy rain in some spots in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chanthaburi and Trat. Temperatures will range from 24 to 27 degrees Celsius to 30 to 34 degrees Celsius, with southwest winds of 20 to 40 kilometres per hour. Sea waves will reach 2 to 3 metres, rising above 3 metres in thunderstorm areas.
South East Coast
Thunderstorms are expected over 30% of the area, mostly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani, Yala and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26 degrees Celsius to 32 to 36 degrees Celsius, with southwest winds of 20 to 35 kilometres per hour. Sea waves will reach 1 to 2 metres, rising above 2 metres further offshore and in thunderstorm areas.
South West Coast
Thunderstorms are forecast over 30% of the area, mostly in Ranong, Phang Nga, Trang and Satun. Temperatures will range from 24 to 27 degrees Celsius to 31 to 35 degrees Celsius. From Phuket northward, southwest winds of 20 to 40 kilometres per hour will bring sea waves of 2 to 3 metres, rising above 3 metres in thunderstorm areas. From Krabi southward, southwest winds of 20 to 35 kilometres per hour will bring sea waves of around 2 metres, rising above 2 metres in thunderstorm areas.
Bangkok and Vicinity
Thunderstorms are expected over 60% of the area, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 27 degrees Celsius to 33 to 35 degrees Celsius, and southwest winds of 10 to 25 kilometres per hour.
Sea Conditions
The upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand will see waves of 2 to 3 metres, rising above 3 metres in thunderstorm areas. Sailors are advised to exercise caution, and small boats in these areas should stay ashore.
