The body of a 44-year-old man from Masiphumelele was found washed ashore at Fish Hoek beach on Wednesday, bringing a tragic end to a search that had lasted more than a week.
Fish Hoek police spokesperson Warrant Officer Peter Middleton confirmed that the body was discovered along the shoreline before being identified by family members who later arrived at the scene.
Authorities have not yet publicly released the man’s name.
Reported missing
Ocean View visible policing commander Captain Nick Spreeth confirmed that the man had previously been reported missing, with a missing persons case officially opened on Monday, 11 May, after loved ones launched a desperate search.
The discovery has shocked parts of the deep south community, particularly in Masiphumelele, where residents often rally together during missing persons searches shared through local WhatsApp groups and social media platforms.
Being investigated
Police have not disclosed how the man ended up in the water, and detectives are now working to piece together the circumstances surrounding his death.
Middleton said the case is being investigated by the Fish Hoek Detective Branch.
Police have urged anyone with information linked to the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
