SAPS names four suspects in viral firearm video case

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has publicly identified four people arrested over the reckless handling of unlicensed firearms in a widely shared social media video.

In an update on Tuesday, the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security cluster named the suspects and released their photographs, along with details of the charges.

Suspects identified

Police named the accused as:

  • Thandanani Shaun Khumalo, 34
  • Xolisa Siboto, 22
  • Lebogang Maji, 23
  • Hosiame Chaane, 22

Video sparks outrage and police action

The arrests follow the circulation of a video showing individuals casually cocking and pointing what appear to be real firearms inside a house.

The footage triggered public outrage and prompted a swift police investigation in Tembisa, Midrand and Ebony Park in Gauteng.

Officers first arrested two men, aged 21 and 34, in Tembisa.

They found them in possession of unlicensed firearms and a hijacked vehicle. Police later traced and arrested the two women in Kaalfontein.

All four suspects now face charges linked to the illegal possession, handling and misuse of firearms under the Firearms Control Act.

Police have detained the suspects at Tembisa South SAPS. They are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court. Investigations remain ongoing.

Legal responsibilities under the Firearms Control Act

Police stressed that anyone handling or using a firearm must have legal authorisation.

They must also hold a valid licence or permit under the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.

They also warned that firearm owners must secure their weapons and prevent access by anyone without the required competency certificates or licences.

Authorities can charge registered owners who allow unauthorised access.

Police added that even toy or imitations can lead to serious consequences if used in a way that creates fear or gives the impression of a real weapon.
