  • President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the judicial commission’s mandate until 18 December 2026 to allow for a thorough investigation.
  • Chaired by Justice Sisi Khampepe, the probe examines allegations of political interference that stalled cases referred by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
  • Established in May 2025, the commission was the result of a legal settlement with victims’ families seeking accountability for decades of investigative delays.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has granted a significant extension to the judicial commission of inquiry investigating the suppression of apartheid-era criminal cases.

Now set to conclude on 18 December 2026, the probe is led by former Constitutional Court Justice Sisi Khampepe.

The commission’s primary focus is to determine whether state officials or external actors deliberately sabotaged the prosecution of atrocities highlighted by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

The inquiry was formalised in May 2025 following a landmark court settlement. It was prompted by the families of victims who argued that justice had been systematically denied through political meddling.

This body is tasked with uncovering why hundreds of cases recommended for prosecution by the TRC were left to languish for decades, effectively shielding perpetrators from legal consequences.

The Presidency confirmed that the extension follows a formal request from Justice Khampepe, who cited the need for additional time to finalise findings and scrutinise complex evidence.

While the President considered various stakeholder perspectives regarding the delay, the decision underscores a commitment to providing a definitive account of these historical failures.

By the new 2026 deadline, the commission aims to identify those responsible for obstructing the path to justice.
