‘Sekusele kancane’: Former Orlando Pirates star ready to pop champagne

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Hleza Mofedi is confident that the Buccaneers will be crowned champions this weekend.

The Soweto giants need just a win in their remaining two matches to claim the Betway Premiership.

Mofedi was instrumental when the Buccaneers claimed the league during the 2002/03 season under Roy Barreto. The former Jomo Cosmos midfielder has pointed out similarities between this current season and the 2002/03 campaign which saw Orlando Pirates win their second PSL title.

“We are Happy People! It is so nice to belong to the Orlando Amstel Arena, right now,”je told Soccer Laduma.

“Our players have done so well this season and they deserve the credit,” Mofedi said.

“It reminds me of our time when we won the league in 2002 under Roy Barreto.

“I remember we had Jomo Cosmos and Wits University among the teams we played in the final fixtures and we did the job.”

Orlando Pirates are on the verge of making history

If the Buccaneers can beat either Durban City or Orbit College, they will be the first team in South Africa to have won three trebles.

Their first treble was won in 2011 under Ruud Krol which was the turning point in the club’s fortune. The next season, the Sea Robbers claimed another treble, winning the MTN8, Telkom Knockout and the league.

A decade and a half later, Orlando Pirates can re-create that and win a historic treble under Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
