Killer crocodile: Who is businessman believed to have been eaten?

Friends and family of missing Mpumalanga businessman Gabriel Batista are likely fearing the worst after human remains were recovered in the stomach of a large crocodile in the Komati River over the weekend.  Police have yet to confirm the results of the DNA tests undertaken.

Batista is believed to be one of several humans eaten by the crocodile, after several pairs of shoes and other items were discovered in its belly.

KILLER CROCODILE: DNA TESTED ON HUMAN REMAINS

A week ago, Gabriel Batista was reported missing after he attempted to cross a flooded bridge over the Komati River.  The vehicle –  a black Ford Ranger – was later found empty, with concerns that he had been swept down the river.

Over the weekend, Mpumalanga police made the gruesome discovery that a large crocodile is believed to have eaten the businessman after human remains were found inside its stomach. The crocodile – suspected to be digesting a large meal – had been spotted sunbathing on the riverbank for several days – during the search and rescue mission.

A clip of the animal – which was euthanised – being airlifted out of the river went viral around the world.

Its belly was cut open, revealing the remains of two human arms, part of a rib cage and a piece of chest flesh. Six pairs of additional shoes were also discovered inside.

Captain Johan Potgieter was tasked with being lowered into the river and tying a rope around the crocodile’s body. Speaking out on the risky mission, he said, “Then I knew it was 100% dead. Because if it weren’t, it would have definitely attacked me.

“I had to stick to the plan and do as we had planned… otherwise things would have gone wrong.”

WHO IS THE MPUMALANGA BUSINESSMAN?

Gabriel Batista is the owner of the Border Country Inn and sports bar, located near the South African-Mozambican border.

The 59-year-old has hosted several high-profile parties at his venue, including Komati Fest last year, which was billed to feature artists such as DJ Maphorisa and Mawhoo.

A year ago, a video of several female influencers accusing Batista of non-payment for services rendered went viral on social media. The Mpualanga businessman denied the claims, accusing the women of running a “fraudulent scheme” in a legal letter.
