SA football legend Doctor Khumalo honoured by Tshwane University of Technology for his outstanding contribution to the game and player development

Legendary South African soccer player Doctor Khumalo has officially received an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Science (Kinesiology and Coaching Science) from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) on Thursday, 30 April 2026.
The institution congratulated Khumalo in a tribute social media statement.
“The Tshwane University of Technology is proud to officially confer upon Theophilus Doctor Khumalo an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Science (Kinesiology and Coaching Science) through the Faculty of Science.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in South African history, Dr Khumalo is also a highly accomplished coach, talent scout and respected football analyst,” the university said.

According to TUT, the doctorate recognises Khumalo’s immense contribution to South African football.
“This honorary doctorate celebrates his extraordinary journey, honours his exceptional talent and recognises his immense contribution to South African football, as well as his unwavering commitment to developing and inspiring the next generation of soccer stars.
Congratulations, Dr Theophilus Doctor Khumalo!” the university added.
Khumalo rose to prominence as a midfield maestro for Kaizer Chiefs and became a cornerstone of the South African national team during the country’s return to international football after isolation.
The former Bafana Bafana midfielder played a pivotal role in South Africa’s historic 1996 Africa Cup of Nations triumph on home soil, helping to reintroduce South African football to the global stage with flair, leadership and humility.
