The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has launched a formal investigation into allegations of workplace bullying following the tragic suicide of a senior officer at Sunnyside Police Station.

The South African Policing Union (SAPU) claims that the Lieutenant Colonel, a relief commander in the Tshwane District, took his own life last week after enduring what they describe as a long-standing pattern of victimisation by the Station Commander.

According to SAPU, the officer was on leave when he was summoned back to the station for a firearm inspection.

It is alleged that during this meeting, the Station Commander spoke to him in a demeaning manner, reportedly referring to him as a “blank file.”

Colleagues state that the officer expressed he could no longer tolerate the abuse before returning home, handing his work phone to his brother, and fatally shooting himself at the back of his house.

The union has raised serious concerns regarding the working environment at the station, suggesting that many members are too intimidated by potential victimisation to report misconduct.

SAPU further alleged that previous grievances raised with the District Commander have been ignored.

In response, SAPS management has stated that they view the allegations with extreme gravity and are working to establish the facts.

While urging the public and media to avoid unverified speculation, the organisation emphasised its commitment to member wellbeing and promised appropriate disciplinary action if any wrongdoing is confirmed.
