2026 Emmy Winners: The first Emmy win is oddly satisfying to watch, perhaps because awards season usually comes with the familiar set of faces: same actors, same shows, same conversations, same acceptance speeches that begin on humble notes of “I did not expect this”, and then every once in a while Emmy finds a completely new face.

The new faces are one of the nicest things about the 2026 Emmy Awards.

The first two nights of the 78th Emmys: the Creative Arts Emmys have already handed out more than 100 awards across technical, creative, guest and supporting categories.

Widow’s Bay emerged as the biggest winner with eight trophies; DTF St. Louis followed with six, and Spider-Noir, The Pitt and Pluribus also had strong nights. The numbers are, however, not the most interesting facts; it is the people.

The actors who have been around for years and finally have an Emmy; the performers whose first nomination became their win; the pop stars casually wandering into television and leaving with a bouquet; and then there is Shailene Woodley, whose Emmy journey has been quietly waiting for this exact moment.

Shailene Woodley Finally Has Her Emmy

Shailene Woodley’s Emmy win feels like one of those things that should have happened already. She was nominated back in 2017 for Big Little Lies, where she played Jane Chapman. It was the performance that had put her firmly into the prestige-TV conversation. Nine years later, she finally walked away with the trophy, but this time for her guest performance in Paradise.

There is something lovely about the fact that it came through a “guest role”. Woodley did not need a huge awards season campaign around her; she did not need to be the centre of the show’s universe. She just appeared in Paradise, made the character matter and left with enough of an impression that voters remembered her.

The win feels like a career coronation and more like Hollywood finally remembering something it already knew: Shailene Woodley can act and leave an impression.

The First-Timers Had a Good Weekend

Woodley was not alone as a first-time Emmy Winner. David Harbour also received his first Emmy for his role in DTF St. Louis. For anyone who has spent years knowing him primarily as Hopper from Stranger Things, there is something particularly fun about seeing Harbour collect an Emmy for an entirely different kind of performance.

Linda Cardellini, who feels like an actor who has been a part of television forever, has a career where you might assume that there must already be an Emmy somewhere on her shelf. It was, however, her performance in DTF St. Louis that brought her the win, making this one of the celebratory moments.

Ernest Harden Jr. has a simpler but unique first. His first nomination became his first Emmy win. He won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Louie Cloverfield in The Pitt.

Betty Gilpin won her first Emmy for Widow’s Bay, transforming her from a nominee to a winner.

The Wins with a Little History

Not every memorable winner was a first-timer. Mariska Hargitay already has an Emmy award but received two Creative Arts Emmys for My Mom Jayne. She won Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special and Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program, recognising her directorial debut.

Rob Reiner’s won a posthumous Emmy Award for his guest role as Albert Schnurr in season 4 of FX’s The Bear. This is his third Emmy victory. His previous two wins were for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his iconic role as Michael “Meathead” Stivic in All in the Family (won in 1974 and 1978).

This is the kind of win that hits different. It is not really about the trophy anymore, but about the strange, beautiful way television can keep pieces alive long after their work has been made.

Julie Andrews won for her voice performance as Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton. 

Perhaps that is What Makes this Year’s Emmys Interesting

The 2026 Emmy Awards are not yet over. The main Primetime ceremony is scheduled for September 14, so the biggest categories are still behind the doors.

The first two nights have given us something more than the predictable winners’ table and have served us a little of everything.

Somewhere in all the wins, the awards show has also shown us that the fun is not always in who wins but in what the win means, because it is the story around the win that makes us care.
